Korean director Hur Jin-ho will direct the Chinese remake of a French literature classic named "Dangerous Liaisons," according to a U.S. entertainment magazine.

California-based The Hollywood Reporter reported yesterday that Hur of "Christmas in August" fame will helm the upcoming pic which is the centerpiece to a slate of five co-productions by China's Zonbo Media and Singapore's Homerun Asia.

The collaboration, between 400 to 500 million yuan (62 to 77 million U.S. dollars) in total, will be aimed at creating new Asian movies for a worldwide audience. Hur's film will cost 15 million dollars.

Hur was chosen for the film because "'Dangerous Liaisons' is an international story, so a different viewpoint would bring a different element to the film,” Daniel Yun, CEO of Homerun Asia, was quoted as saying in the report.

"Dangerous Liaisons," set in Shanghai in the 1930s, will go into shoot starting September while top Korean and Chinese actors and actresses, including Fan Bingbing and Zhou Xun, are being considered for the leads, the magazine also said.

Hur, 47, debuted in 1997 with "Christmas in August" and has since directed close to a dozen movies including "One Fine Spring Day," "April Snow" and "A Good Rain Knows."

He has been received critical acclaim for his romantic movies in particular and has made his name known with the international audience as well.
