Korean firms own 30,954 imported cars, each worth more than W100 million (US$1=W1,058). Their total value amounts to W4.51 trillion.

Counting individual owners associated with the companies, the total number of imported luxury cars they own stands at 48,423, according to data given by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs to Grand National Party lawmaker Ahn Hong-joon on Saturday.

Not counting leased or individually owned cars, the number still stands at 10,466.

Sixty-three firms own three or more foreign cars worth over W100 million, and four — Samsung Electronics, CJ Cheil Jedang, and law firms Shin and Kim, and Bae, Kim and Lee LLC — own 10 such cars each.

Samsung Electronics topped the list in terms of the total value of such cars with W2.98 billion, including a Mercedes-Benz Maybach 62 (W791 million) and a Soviet-made ZIL (W378.5 million).

KEYEAST, the entertainment agency of Bae Yong-joon, is the Korean firm with the most expensive foreign car, a Maybach 62 (W800.36 million).

Some 19 trade associations and foundations, 11 school foundations, and nine religious organizations also own several foreign limousines worth over W100 million each.

“Corporate CEOs spend their company money buying imported cars worth more than W100 million for themselves and pay car taxes and register them in their company’s name,” the lawmaker said.
